The Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited has issued a flood warning to people living in the low-lying areas around the Krishna Raja Sagar dam on Friday. The warning was issued as heavy inflow was seen into the dam due to the heavy rainfall in the Cauvery catchment areas.

Confirming the alert to TNM, an official from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said, “Yes, the Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited has issued a flood alert to people living in the low-lying areas around the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam to move to safer places with their livestock as there are chances of flooding. The water may also be released from the dam if it reaches 124.8 ft, which is the maximum amount the dam can hold."

The Chief Minister of Karnataka HD Kumaraswamy too tweeted, alerting people to move to safer zones as the rain forecaste predicted good rains in the catchement areas.

"Due to incessant rains in the catchment areas, water levels have reached their max. capacity in KRS, Harangi and Hemavati dams. I request villagers living on the riverside tobe extremely careful as the water level may rise any time. Please move to safer zones from low-lying areas," Kumaraswamy's tweet reads.

The alert was also tweeted by the Central Water Commission’s Official Flood Forecast handle.

“With the incoming inflows to the reservoirs KRS and Hemavathy, both reservoirs may get filled up by day after tomorrow i.e. on 15-07-18. Necessary precautions may be taken to avoid downstream flooding. Releases may be done as per the standard protocols and rule curve. EE Cauvery Div,” the tweet said.

The official also said that the KSNDMC has issued a good rain forecast in the Cauvery catchment area to the KRS officials and that's why they issued a flood alert.
