Five injured as protest against thermal power plant in Kudgi turns violent

The News Minute | July 6, 2014 | 12.52 pm ISTTwo people were injured when police fired in the air after protests against the National Thermal Power Project in Kudgi in Bijapur district turned violent.According to a report published by Deccan Chronicle, five people were injured including two who were injured by bullets fired by the police after farmers and local people damaged property and set vehicles on fire. Two police personnel were also injured in the violence.Protests against the power project have been simmering for several months as the local people demanded jobs after giving up their land for the project.Deccan Chronicle quotes one of the injured, Jagan, as saying: ““The corporation brought workers for the plant from different states in North India, instead of providing jobs to the local eligible youth. Only some locals were given petty jobs, while those eligible for higher posts were deprived of it.”According to The Hindu, the police tried to control the protestors by lathicharge and also burst tear-gas shells, but when that failed, they resorted to firing.
