A minor girl from Chinthamani village in Chickballapur district of Karnataka was reportedly abducted, raped and subsequently murdered late on Wednesday night.

According to a report published by The Hindu, the girl was 8 years old and she was fast asleep besides her family members on Wednesday night at their house, when the accused abducted her.

By the time her parents woke up and realised their child was missing, the 25-year-old accused had taken the child to a farmhouse and allegedly raped her. The police told The Times of India that the accused was the girl's maternal uncle and that he was allegedly in an inebriated condition when he committed the crime. After taking the girl to a farmhouse where he reportedly raped her, he murdered her and dumped her body close to the girl's house.

The girl's parents launched a frantic hunt after they realised the girl was missing and found her body in a bush in the outskirts of the village, in the wee hours of Thursday.

According to reports, the police have taken the 25-year-old into custody, after the girl's parents expressed their suspicion.

Chintamani Rural police has registered a case.

A report published by Reuters in 2015 revealed that almost 90 percent of the rapes reported in India were committed by people known to the survivor. While the NCRB data showed that there were 337,922 reports of violence against women including rape, 86 percent of this was committed by someone known to the woman.
