Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who was criticised over his comments on the Kannada film industry, defended his remarks on Monday, March 4 saying that his words may have sounded “harsh and rustic” but were intended for the industry's benefit.

“Whatever I said about the Kannada film industry is for its good. My words may have sounded harsh because of their rustic nature. I want the Kannada film industry to survive and thrive,” Shivakumar said.

The controversy stems from his speech at the inaugural event of the Bengaluru International Film Festival on Saturday, where he expressed displeasure over the limited participation of film personalities in the event. He also took a dig at them for not supporting the Mekedatu Padayatra organised by the Congress, urging them to engage in movements related to Karnataka’s land, language, and water.

He had questioned the relevance of the festival if major figures in the industry did not participate. “Going forward, I want the Film Chamber and Academy members to take this as either a warning or a request. This is not my program; it's your program. Bhima Jewellery, the sponsor, is sitting right there. Does only a handful of 20 people require this cinema?” he asked.

“If the government does not grant permission for shooting, they cannot make a film. They cannot proceed with shooting. I also know exactly where to tighten the nuts and bolts, please understand that,” he had said.

Responding to the backlash, Shivakumar questioned why the film industry should not take part in movements concerning the state's interests. “Rajkumar used to participate in all protests to protect the interests of the state, cutting across party lines. Isn’t Rajkumar a role model for the industry?” he said.
