The humble tender coconut water will now come served with a twist in Karnataka, thanks to the Hassan district administration. In an effort to sell and promote the natural beverage, the district administration is planning to set up a “coconut hut”.

Designed by the Coir Board, the hut will be selling coconut water in various flavours such and lime and honey, Deccan Chronicle reports.

To be built in the border of Hirisave village on the national highway, which connects Bengaluru and Mangaluru via Hassan, the eco-friendly hut will be made entirely from parts of the coconut tree. Apart from tender coconut water, other coconut-related products will also be sold there.

The hut is expected to be inaugurated some time later this year ahead of the Mahamastakabhisheka of the Bahubali statue in February, 2018, the report states.

Depending on the response, the administration could open similar such huts across the district later.

Considered a healthy drink, the coconut output in South India has taken a hit due to the drought conditions and urbanisation in the region, pushing up prices.

The Hindu in March reported that production had been affected in several coconut growing districts in Karnataka, including Tumakuru, Hassan, Mandya and Chikkamagaluru, due to scarcity of water.

The output was expected to fall by nearly 40% this year.

In Kerala though, it is rapid urbanisation, resulting in decrease in the area for cultivation, that has affected the crop output.
