A Bengaluru teacher found guilty of sexual assault on one of his students has been sentenced to three years rigourous imprisonment. This after the court showed leniency towards him on humanitarian grounds.

Abdulbari (34), an Arabic teacher who lives in Gangondanahalli in the city and hails from Purnia district in Bihar,  was accused of raping a six-year-old girl last year, but the prosecution could only prove the sexual assault charge, The New Indian Express reported.

The incident took place on March 19, 2014, when the victim had gone to Abdulbari's house for tuition. He used to teach Quran to the girl and her brother. He was later booked under various sections of the POCSO Act, 2012, and the IPC for rape.

The report states that the court found him guilty of sexual assault and though the maximum punishment for sexual assault under the POCSO Act is five years, the court showed him leniency keeping in mind his young wife and elderly parents.

Apart from slapping a Rs 10,000 fine against Abdulbari, the judge also asked him to pay the victim a compensation of Rs 5,000, adds the report.
