Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka Cricket Association secretary, treasurer resign

The Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have stepped down, taking moral responsibility for the stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium that claimed 11 lives and left over 50 injured.

In a statement issued on Saturday, June 7, KSCA Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam said their roles in the incident were limited, but they were resigning owing to “moral responsibility" for the tragedy. 

“We have tendered our resignation to our respective posts... by way of a letter dated 06.06.2025 to the President of Karnataka State Cricket Association,” the statement read.

The stampede occurred on June 4 outside the stadium during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title win. The event, organised in collaboration with DNA Entertainment Networks, a private firm, drew a massive crowd and led to a chaotic situation outside the venue.

On June 5, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced at a hurriedly convened press conference that the state cabinet had decided to arrest officials from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the KSCA, and DNA Networks in connection with the incident. He added that the investigation would be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). 

Sources told TNM that Additional Director General of Police (CID) BK Singh will head the investigation.

The CM also announced a judicial inquiry into the stampede, to be led by retired Karnataka High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha. This was in addition to the previously ordered magisterial inquiry led by Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner Dayananda K Jagadeesha.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka High Court has taken suo moto cognisance of the incident.Four individuals associated with RCB and DNA Networks were arrested by the Bengaluru police within 24 hours of the CM’s announcement.
