A 40-year-old IT professional has been taken into custody after allegedly opening fire with an air gun at security guards and parked vehicles inside an apartment complex near Anekal on the outskirts of Bengaluru in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident occurred at Sipani Apartments near Bandapur in Anekal at around 2.45 am. The accused, identified as Anurag Tiwari, a native of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, had been living in a rented flat at the complex for the past eight months and was employed at a private IT company in Whitefield.
According to police, Tiwari was allegedly under the influence of alcohol and was speaking loudly on the phone and shouting inside his apartment. He later stepped onto the balcony and allegedly began firing pellets from an air gun.
Police said the pellets struck several parked cars and the metal sheets covering the parking area, causing panic among residents who were awakened by the sound of gunfire.
Security guards rushed to investigate after hearing the shots. However, Tiwari allegedly turned the air gun towards them and fired multiple rounds in their direction, forcing the guards to take cover. They then blew whistles to alert other residents and sought police assistance.
According to investigators, the firing continued for nearly 45 minutes before personnel from the Surya Nagar Police Station reached the apartment complex and took Tiwari into custody.
Police have seized the air gun and pellets allegedly used in the incident. No injuries have been reported.
A case has been registered at the Surya Nagar Police Station, and further investigation is underway.
