The Karnataka government has officially notified the formation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), marking the end of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) as the city's governing body. Beginning May 15, Bengaluru will be administered under the newly constituted GBA.

The government issued a notification on Wednesday, May 14 stating that the GBA would come into force from May 15. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will serve as the chairman of the GBA, while Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar will take on the role of vice-chairman.

With the implementation of the Bengaluru Administration Act, 2024, the BBMP will officially cease to exist. The new authority is expected to bring sweeping changes in the governance structure of the city, including the possibility of dividing the former BBMP region into seven separate municipal corporations, each headed by its own commissioner, as part of the new decentralised urban governance model.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority will have control over critical planning and financial matters of the metropolitan region. The GBA’s jurisdiction is expected to cover an area of approximately 1,400 square kilometres.

Additionally, key civic and infrastructure agencies such as the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) will now come under the purview of the GBA.
