The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has proposed a 10-km flyover to decongest Kanakapura Road, a traffic-choked arterial route in Bengaluru. Estimated to cost Rs 1,200 crore, the project will connect Banashankari to the NICE Road junction, offering commuters an alternative to the heavily congested Kanakapura stretch, The New Indian Express reported.

The project is part of a broader initiative comprising 17 similar flyovers aimed at addressing Bengaluru’s chronic traffic challenges. The initiative is being pushed by Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar, who also represents the Kanakapura Assembly constituency. The BBMP has begun preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the flyover, which will be built along the BWSSB Cauvery Pipeline Road, running parallel to Kanakapura Road.

Citing increased traffic and constraints posed by the Metro corridor along the road, Shivakumar directed the BBMP to explore alternative solutions. “As Metro rail passes through this road, it is difficult to construct a grade separator. So, it is necessary to make an alternative arrangement. ,” he wrote to BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath, according to the report.

The Cauvery Pipeline Road, which passes through land largely owned by government agencies, including the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), has been identified for the project. However, challenges such as the road's uneven width and proximity to water pipelines will need to be addressed.
