BBMP to clamp down on illegal PG accommodations in Bengaluru

Written by : TNM Staff

Days after a 23-year-old techie was raped at knife-point in a paying guest accommodation in Parappana Agrahara in Bengaluru, BBMP has begun taking steps to identify illegal facilities.

Paying guest accommodations without a license and those that do not adhere to necessary safety norms will be identified in all the eight zones in the city.

Rohit BR reports for The Times of India that the process of procuring a license will be eased by making it an online process.

Sarfaraz Khan, joint commissioner (health), BBMP, told TOI that many PGs run by natives of Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, especially in the outer zones of Mahadevapura, Bommanahalli and South zone, lack necessary license.

Urban expert ASK Pani said that despite a council ruling in 2013 which made it mandatory for paying guest accommodations that house more than 12 people to register with the civic body, the lack of coordination between the civic body and the police affected the process.

On Friday, an unidentified man barged into a room on the fourth floor of a paying guest accommodation and raped a woman, who was alone in the room at the time.
