The survivor of the brutal ATM attack in 2013, Jyoti Uday, identified Madhukar Reddy as her assailant in the case, on Friday at Parapana Agrahara Central Prison.

“The line-up had four other people apart from Madhukar Reddy. They were of the same height and bore similar physique,” said Jail Superintendent of the Parapana Agrahara prison.

Jyoti was initially confused as it had been three years since the incident but she later managed to identify him in the presence of the Bengaluru tahsildar, he added.

“When Jyoti Uday was attacked in the ATM, the assailant had stolen her mobile phone and sold it to a man named Mujeeb. He too identified Reddy in the line up as the man who he purchased the phone from,” the Jail Superintendent said.

In a brazen attack in November 2013 that was caught on CCTV, a senior bank officer was robbed and repeatedly hit with a machete by the attacker.

Visuals showed the woman Jyothi Uday being threatened and then hit by the assailant, who left her bleeding inside the Corporation Bank ATM at NR Nagar in the city.

The Bengaluru police coincidentally, learned of the offender’s identity, three years later. Madhukar Reddy was taken in for questioning on January 31 by the Madanapalle police after some Traffic police personnel identified him on the streets.

Madhukar is a resident of Nimmanapalli and has several cases filed against him.

The Madanapalle police had detained Madhukar in connection with a murder, which had occurred in Dharmavaram. Madhukar had also allegedly escaped from a prison in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district.

The big break in the case comes just months after the Karnataka police filed a closure report with the Karnataka High Court in 2016, as they could not find any leads in the case.

On March 11, Madhukar Reddy was brought to Bengaluru from Andhra Pradesh for questioning and was remanded to police custody for a week.
