The News Minute | December 18, 2014 | 11.09 am ISTThe Karnataka High Court on Wednesday commuted the death sentences handed to seven convicts in the 2000 serial church blasts case.In 2000, churches in Wadi in Kalaburgi, Keshwapur in Hubballi and JJ Nagar in Bengaluru were targeted and 22 people were convicted by a special court in 2008. Seven people had been given the death penalty on Wednesday, the court said while upholding the conviction that although the convicts had indeed targeted the churches, there had been no loss of life and therefore did not qualify as the “rarest of rare” cases. The accused belonged to the banned Deendar Anjuman group which was banned by the union government in 2001. For detailed information on the case see The Hindu.Tweet
