The News Minute| August 23, 2014| 12.30 am ISTSocial media is inundated with videos of famous and not-so-famous people pouring a bucket of ice water on themselves. It's all part of a movement to raise awareness about ALS or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), "a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord." This can often lead to complete paralysis. There is said to be no known cure for ALS.Everyone queuing up does have good intentions and at last count the donations have exceeded $40 million, but not everyone pouring the bucket of water or the ones watching it know much about ALS. The Youtube channel 'Unacademy' has uploaded a video in which a doctor explains what its all about. We think the intro is a bit too long, but the explanation is worth a watch.
