The teaser of Otrai Panai Maram, directed by Puthiyavan Rasaiyah was released on Twitter on Wednesday by director/producer Pa Ranjith. The film tells the story of Sri Lankan war widows who go through several challenges in their daily life.
The teaser of the film begins with a story of displacement. Starring Puthiyavan, Navaayugha and Ajathika Puthiyavan in important roles, the teaser presents a picture of war and the destruction caused by it to the landscapes and the people. With missiles flying across and machine guns blazing, the teaser gives us a glimpse of what the film is about.

Otrai Panai Maram, meaning ‘a lone palm tree’ has been screened at over 35 film festivals, including the Moondance International Film Festival, gaining international acclaim for itself. According to reports, the film has also bagged a total of 12 awards across film festivals.
The director had previously made Mann in 2005, also an award winning movie. With music by Ashwamithra, the cinematography of Otrai Panai Maram has been done by Mahinda Abesinche (Sri Lankan) and C J Rajkumar (Indian). The film has been edited by Suresh URS and presented under the banner RSSS Pictures.
In an interview with Cinema Express, the film’s director said, “I have seen the war from close quarters in the early stages. After it ended, I came back from the UK to work with refugees and rehabilitate them. I saw the struggles these women go through after rehabilitation. The film is based on a collation of my experiences.”
The film’s producer Thanigaivel, has said in an interview, “The film begins during the final days of the Sri Lankan war and tells a story which even the real fighters and people who have witnessed the war firsthand fear to talk about. Realistic acting, natural cinematography, and scenes with twists and turns that weigh on your heartstrings will take the viewers to the middle of a village in Killinochi in Eezham where the film is set.”
The film’s release date is yet to be announced.
