Soundarya Rajinikanth starts work on 'Ponniyin Selvan' web series

For the past several years, many top directors have expressed their desire to adapt the most popular historical novel, Ponniyin Selvan into a film. The book traces the life of the most popular among the Chozha kings, Raja Raja Chozhan I. It is in fact about his early life when he was known as Arul Mozhi Varman.

Recently, Soundarya Rajinikanth has announced that she will be bringing this history to life through a web series. She took to Twitter to reveal, “Ponniyin Selvan - This is THE EPIC. I have to and want to do justice to it and do it right. Taking all efforts to ensure the initial work is done with all clarity. Will surely update all on progress god bless us !!! #WorkingToSeePonniyinSelvanOnTheDigitalScreenSoon.”

Soundarya who is the creative director of the series will be co-producing the under the banner May 6th Entertainment along with Mx Player. The series will be directed by Sooriyaprathap S who is a history scolar and had also worked with veteran director KS Ravikumar and Soundarya earlier. The series will be streamed on MX Player.

Soundarya Rajinikanth’s last film as director was Velaiilla Pattadhari 2. It is an action-comedy film that was shot simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. The film had Dhanush and Amala Paul as the main leads with Vivek, Hrishikesh, Saranya Ponvannan, and Samuthirakani in pivotal roles. Bollywood actor Kajol played the baddie in it.

Besides playing the lead role, Dhanush had also co-produced the film with N Ramasamy. He had penned the story and dialogues for it as well. Sean Roldan had set the tunes for the film and it was released worldwide on 11 August 2017.

Soundarya's first directorial venture was Kochadaiiyaan  in 2014. Written by KS Ravikumar and directed by Soundarya, it was India's first photorealistic motion capture film, featuring characters design. Rajinikanth, also Soundarya's father, enacted and voiced the two lead roles.
