Rajini and Shankar’s sci-fi flick 2.0 has been nominated for the Golden Reel Award, one of the highest honours for sound editors around the globe. Resul Pookutty, the sound designer for 2.0, announced the news on Twitter on Saturday, sharing a screenshot of the official invite from the organisers of the Golden Reel Awards.

The film has been nominated for this rare honour under the sound editing-foreign language feature film category along with other movies like The Happy Prince, The Guilty, Never Look Away and Winter Brothers.

Produced with a massive budget, not only was the film shot in 3D but 2.0 was also released in the 4D sound technology for the first time ever. The sound format was called 4D SRL, SRL being the abbreviation for Shankar, Resul, Lyca. Only a few theatres in the country have been equipped to handle this technology.

Speaking to TNM earlier, sources had explained 4D sound technology as an innovation that gives audience a real-time experience while watching a movie.

“In the regular 3D sound technology while watching a movie in a theatre, you would find speakers on both the sides of you or even above you. But when it comes to 4D sound, you will find speakers under your seat too. You will have about 500+ outputs in 4D,” sources said.

While 2.0 has got one nomination, A Quiet Place, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, First Man and Roma lead with 3 nominations each. The award ceremony will take place on February 17 at Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.

Bankrolled by A Subhaskaran under his banner Lyca Productions, 2.0 is the costliest Indian film to have ever been made, with a budget of over Rs 600 crore. Also starring Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey and Adil Hussain in pivotal roles, the film has music by AR Rahman. Touted to be among Asia’s costliest ventures, the film hit screens on November 29 and was simultaneously released in Hindi and Telugu.
