Payal Kapadia has become the first Indian woman director to be nominated for the prestigious Golden Globes award for her film All We Imagine As Light. The film also earned a nomination in the Best Non-English Language motion picture at the 82nd Golden Globes. The awards will be declared on January 6 at 6.30 am IST.
Other nominees for best director are Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez, Sean Baker for Anora, Edward Berger for Conclave, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance. Nominees for the Best Non-English Language motion picture are Emilia Perez from France, The Girl With The Needle from Denmark, I am Still Here from Brazil, The Seed of the Sacred Fig from Germany, and Vermiglio from Italy.
All We Imagine As Light has been on an award-winning spree after winning the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival, raising questions about India’s decision not to nominate the film for the Academy Awards. The film won the Best International Feature at the reputed Gotham Awards 2024 and was chosen in the same category at the New York Film Critics Circle (NYCC). It was also named the best film of the year by the reputed Sight and Sound magazine. India has selected Kiran Rao’s Laapata Ladies as the country’s official selection to the Oscars.
Reacting to the nominations, Payal Kapadia said, “I am deeply honored by this nomination and grateful to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for this recognition. This is a celebration of everyone who worked so passionately on the film. To everyone in India, All We Imagine as Light is still in theaters—please go watch it and support us.”
