Marathi blockbuster Sairat to have southern remakes

Written by : TNM

National award-winning filmmaker Nagaraj Manjule’s Marathi drama Sairat, a doomed love story, has caught the attention of southern filmmakers.

Even as several production houses have been mulling over the idea of remaking the critically-acclaimed film in the south, popular producer Rockline Venkatesh acquired the rights for remake in all the four southern languages. He will be jointly producing the southern remakes with the producers of the original and they’ll soon start working on the Kannada version.

Tipped to have become the highest grossing film in the history of the Marathi industry, Sairat features a host of newcomers including the unknown lead pair – Akash Thosar and Pinky Rajguru – who stunned audiences and critics alike with their performances. A story about an upper class girl, who falls in love with a boy from a lower caste, the film is being compared to Balaji Sakthivel’s critically-acclaimed Tamil film, Kadhal.

According to a source close to Venkatesh, the casting process has already begun for the Kannada remake.
