The star cast of Marakkar: Arabikkadalinte Simham just got bigger with its director Priyadarshan roping in veteran actor Mukesh for an important role. The actor will be playing a Zamorin in the film, which is about the naval chief Kunjali Marakkar, played by Mohanlal. Interestingly, despite being in the film industry for more than three decades and half, Marakkar: Arabikkadalinte Simham will be Mukesh’s first historical film.

Reports had come earlier, of the director roping in Tamil actor Prabhu, Bollywood star Suneil Shetty and Telugu actor Nagarjuna to play significant roles in the film. Also, Pranav Mohanlal will be making a cameo appearance, playing the younger version of his dad’s character.

Interestingly, Mohanlal and Prabhu shared screen space in the 1996 release Kaalapani Siraichaalai, which was also directed by Priyadarshan.

Women actors in Marakkar... include actors Keethy Suresh as the heroine and Priyadarshan’s daughter Kalyani playing a special role. The director is also in the process of roping in some English and Arabic actors for this historical besides a Chinese actor for an important role.

It may be mentioned here that the title ‘Kunjali Marakkar’ was bestowed on naval chiefs during the 16th century and these naval chiefs fought valiantly against the Portuguese army. There were four Kunjali Marakkars during that era, of which the fourth is the most valiant and popular. The film is based on his life. It will have extensive sea warfare sequences which will be its highlight.

The film will be produced jointly by Antony Perumbavoor, Santhosh T. Kuruvilla and C.J. Roy under their respective banners. Being a historical, extravagant sets need to be erected for the shooting, particularly for the sea warfare scenes and this will be handled by the National Award winning production designer Sabu Cyril. It may be mentioned here that the art director and Priyadarshan share a good rapport having worked together in over 40 films.

The shooting of this film will begin in November this year and the prep work is currently underway.
