Is Mammootty part of Rajinikanth's 'Kaala'?

Written by : TNM

If the industry grapevine is anything to go by, superstar Rajinikanth and Mammootty are set to reunite after two decades in Pa. Ranjith’s Kaala. Last seen together in Mani Ratnam’s 1991 film Thalapathi, it is rumoured that Mammootty will play a BR Ambedkar-like character in Kaala, which is currently being shot in Mumbai.

The team will shoot in Mumbai for another month and then head to Chennai for the next schedule. While the makers are yet to confirm Mammootty’s inclusion in the project, they haven’t denied the rumours.

In the film produced by Dhanush, superstar plays a slum lord turned gangster and he will also have lines in Hindi and Marathi. The film is tipped to be made as a Tamil-Hindi bilingual and will also be dubbed in Telugu.

The project marks the second Pa. Ranjith film Rajinikanth after Kabali, and it is believed that Kaala revolves around the lives of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai and their fight for equality, lead by Rajinikanth as Kaala.

Nana Patekar is believed to be playing the antagonist, while Gangs of Wasseypur and Nil Battey Sannata fame Pankaj Tripathi plays a cop with grey shades in the film, which also stars Anjali Patil, Huma Qureshi and Samuthirakani. Important sequences of the film will be shot in the Chennai schedule where the makers have erected a set of Dharavi on a budget of over a crore. Santhosh Narayan is scoring the music, while national award-winning editor Sreekar Prasad is also part of the project.
