Madras HC lifts stay on Nayanthara's 'Kolayuthir Kaalam'

The title dispute in Nayanthara’s Kolayuthir Kaalam has been settled in court, and the film can now be expected to hit the screens soon. Kolayuthir Kaalam met with a roadblock prior to its June 14 release. This order comes as a relief to the long-delayed film that went into production in November 2016.

On Friday, Justice Krishnan Ramasamy of the Madras High Court cancelled the stay order and allowed the film to be released. The film’s producer Mathiyalagan confirmed to TNM that it will hit the screens this July.

The Madras High Court on June 11 ordered an interim injunction on the film's release, and asked the film's producers to respond by June 21.

The stay came after hearing a petition filed by director K Balaji Kumar earlier this month, in which he claimed to hold rights to the film’s title, Kolayuthir Kaalam. Balaji Kumar made his debut as director in 2013 with Vidiyum Munn starring Pooja as the lead.

Balaji claimed to have bought the rights to writer Sujatha’s 1981 novel Kolayuthir Kaalam in 2014 and stated that he owned the rights to its title as well. “Since I purchased the novel, I hold the rights to the novel and its title,” he wrote in his petition.

Kolayuthir Kaalam has been produced by V Mathiyalagan of Etcetera Entertainment in association with Starpolaris Pictures LLP. The film has been directed by Chakri Toleti of Unnaipol Oruvan fame. Its Hindi version, also by Chakri, Khamoshi, stars Tamannaah and was released to lukewarm response.

In addition to Nayanthara, Kolaiyuthir Kaalam also has Bhoomika Chawala, Rohini Hattingadi and Malayalam actor Prathap Pothen playing pivotal roles. The cinematography of the film has been done by Corey Geryak, while the editing is by Rameshwar Bhagat. This film is an official remake of 2016 American film Hush.
