Karthik Subbaraj to begin work on Rajinikanth-starrer first, project with Dhanush takes backseat

It was announced long ago that Karthik Subbaraj and Dhanush will team up for a project, to be bankrolled by Mersal producers Sri Thenandal Films. Ever since the initial announcement, there’s been no major development regarding the project and there were reports that it was shelved for reasons unknown.

In his latest interview to Film Companion, Subbaraj spilled beans that the project is slated to go on the floors after his film with Rajinikanth. The Jigarthanda director confirmed that his film with the superstar will roll from May onwards.

Confirming that the reins of the project have been taken over by YNot Studios from Sri Thenandal Films, Subbaraj said: “Due to Mersal, which was a very high budget film, there was a delay in the commencement of this project. However, Thenandal is no longer associated with the project and it has been taken over by YNot Studios. We had plans to commence work on this project from May, but since I got a call from Thalaivar and he wanted to work with me, we’ve pushed the project with Dhanush for now.”

Subbaraj confirmed in a recent interview to a YouTube channel, that it’ll be an action-thriller set against a gangster backdrop. “The story unfolds in New York and we wanted to rope in a very popular Hollywood actor. I wanted someone from The Godfather team to play the role. Hence, we tried approaching Robert De Niro and Al Pacino but it was all in vain. It’s a very tedious process to get these Hollywood actors on board. This process took me nearly six months and we still haven’t finalised anyone for the role.”

Currently awaiting the release of Prabhudheva starrer Mercury, a silent film, Karthik is busy locking the cast and crew for his film with Rajinikanth. It is rumoured that Vijay Sethupathi plays the antagonist in the film. However, Karthik didn’t reveal too much about the project as everything is in a very premature stage.
