DUJ consults lawyers after TNIE legal notice over caste discrimination allegations

The Delhi Union of Journalists is consulting its lawyers after it received a legal notice from The New Indian Express over allegations of casteist discrimination against one of its reporters.Nagaraju Koppula died of lung cancer on April 12, and his friends have alleged that the treatment meted out to him on account of his caste, affected his health and was an influential factor in his death.Following a condolence meeting on April 23, in which senior independent journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurtha participated, the Delhi Union of Journalists had issued a statement condemning the treatment meted out to Nagaraju, who may be the first journalist form the Madiga community to work in the English media.In the statement, DUJ: “resolved to fight for justice against the casteist discrimination and contractual exploitation meted out to him by his employers… (who) underpaid him, denied health benefits…  Provident Fund and other monetary rights pushing him to death”.Read: The death of a Dalit journalist and the question of casteism in the Indian mediaSpeaking to The News Minute, president of the DUJ Sujata Madhok said that the union would consult with lawyers and respond to the legal notice served by TNIE.On April 27, Newslaundry reported that TNIE had served a legal notice on the DUJ dated Arpil 25, asking it to cease engaging in “reckless disregard for the facts and truth of the matter by continuing with your ill-founded action”, failing which the newspaper would be forced to take appropriate legal action.
