Dhanush and Vetrimaaran are teaming up for the fourth time for the upcoming Tamil thriller Asuran. Based on the Tamil novel Vekkai written by Poomani, it is said to be a revenge drama that traces the fight of an oppressed community against those oppressing them. The project, which also stars Manju Warrier as the lead opposite Dhanush, has gone on the floors and the makers are planning to wrap up the shoot in one long schedule. The film, which has music by GV Prakash, is being bankrolled by Kalaipuli Thanu under the banner V Creations.

Reports indicate that popular filmmaker Balaji Sakthivel, best known for directing the Bharath and Sandhya starrer Kadhal, has been roped in to play the antagonist. Neither the makers nor Sakthivel are yet to confirm the reports; however, sources close to Vetrimaaran have confirmed the news. Recently, the makers signed actor Karunas’s son Ken Karunas for a key role in the film. The film’s shoot is currently progressing at breakneck speed. Last seen playing a local ruffian in Maari 2, Dhanush will be seen playing a daily wage labourer in Asuran, and will be seen in a fierce avatar. The title and first look poster of the film were released last month.

Dhanush’s last outing with Vetrimaaran was the critically-acclaimed Vada Chennai, which released last year. The second part in the franchise is slated for release next year. Apparently, the makers have already shot 20% of the second part. After wrapping up Asuran, Dhanush will go ahead and complete the pending work on the second part of Vada Chennai, in which he plays an accidental gangster.

Meanwhile, reports have emerged that Vada Chennai will get a prequel and it’ll be called Rajan Vagaira. Vetrimaaran has revealed in a recent media interaction that he plans to make the prequel as a web series for a digital platform. Vetrimaaran didn’t reveal when he plans to make the prequel or if he has already started work on the project.
