Following its terrific run domestically as well as in major international markets, superstar Rajinikanth’s 2.0 is now eyeing a wide release in China on July 12 via its Chinese distributor HY Media. Not long ago, it was revealed that 2.0 will open in China in around 56000 screens, making it the biggest release for an Indian 3D film ever. However, the latest reports suggest that 2.0 might miss its China release as HY Media fears it will lose more money if it releases the film. The company’s last release was Akshay Kumar starrer Padman which couldn’t even recover the investment cost.

According to some reports that are circulating in Chinese trade, 2.0 should make over $25 million to ensure HY Media doesn’t lose any money. With Disney’s Lion King due for release next week and it will open big in China, it is unlikely that 2.0 may find a release. For its Chinese release, the film was retitled Robot 2.0: Resurgence.  

Shankar directed 2.0 marked the return of Rajinikanth as scientist Vaseegaran and Chitti robot. He was also seen playing the titular character 2.0, the reloaded version of Chitti. Akshay Kumar, who debuted in the role of an antagonist in southern cinema, was seen playing an ornithologist who uses the fifth force to wreak havoc and take revenge when he loses his fight to telecom companies while trying to save birds from dying from the emission of mobile towers. 

2.0, made on a budget of over Rs 300 crore, was released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. Filmmaker Karan Johar had released the Hindi version which did exceptionally well for a dubbed film. The movie also starred Amy Jackson, Sudhanshu Pandey and Adil Hussain among others in key roles.
