Even months after Sundar C’s upcoming magnum opus Sangamithra was launched at Cannes International Film Festival last year and Shruti Haasan walking out of the project citing creative differences, there’s been no update on the film’s shoot.

Amid rumours that the project has been dropped, the film’s leading lady Disha Patani was quoted in a report by Mumbai Mirror as saying: “The shooting will take place in Hyderabad on sets very similar to that of Baahubali. It will be filmed on a grand scale and if everything goes according to plan, the first part will be unveiled next year.”

The latest update from some reliable industry sources is that the project will finally start rolling from August. Neither the makers nor director Sundar C is yet to make an official announcement regarding commencement of the shoot.

Earlier this year, putting to rest rumours about the project being shelved, Sundar said in a media interaction that it was taking more time than expected to start the project because of its scale. “The pre-production work is still going on. On a project of this scale, pre-production is followed by storyboard creation. Unlike other films where work on graphics will be done only after shooting, here in Sangamithra, we have started it before shooting. The project is very much on; we hope to start shooting from second half of this year.”

Tipped to be being made on a budget of Rs 150 crore, the film happens to the most expensive project in the careers of Sundar C and the makers.

Going the Baahubali way, the first part will feature Arya while the second one will star Jayam Ravi. Jayam Ravi, too, had said that he would start training for the project and beef up to play a very challenging role. Arya, who hasn’t had a hit in a long time, has pinned all his hopes on this film as he wishes to bounce back strongly.

Double Oscar-winning AR Rahman has been roped in to compose the music and he has apparently already completed a song. The film will also be made in Telugu and Hindi but perhaps not simultaneously along with its Tamil version.
