Tweeting while watching TV? Not good for the brain

The News Minute | September 30, 2014 | 6.35 pm ISTStudy shows that those people who use multiple devices concurrently had lesser emotional and cognitive powers in the brain. The study conducted by researchers at University of Sussex's Sackler Centre for Consciousness compared the emotive and cognitive power of 75 people who were asked about the details of their usage of media devices. The study found that those who used more than one device concurrently more often had a lesser density of grey matter in the anterior cingulated cortex region of the brain, reported Slare. It is this region that is responsible for cognitive and emotional control functions.   However, the researchers are yet to ascertain which is the cause and which is the effect. They say that it could also be possible that those people with lesser grey matter density could be less content with using one device at a time. Whatever be the cause or effect, there need not be much worry because grey matter even if less can be generated. Physical exercise can increase the number of brain cells, studies have already shown. In humans aerobic exercise can help enhance cognitive abilities.
