Sunny Leone smashes her way into the top ranks of Bollywood

Karenjit Kaur Vohra. Does the name ring a bell? No?How about Sunny Leone. Many bells now? Before she first hit the shores of Bollywood four years ago with an appearance on the reality TV show Bigg Boss, she was known only as a porn star. But in these four years, Sunny Leone has gone from being an outcast in a snooty industry to a leading Bollywood star, and now the “most desirable” woman in the country. A recent poll by The Times of India to find out the most desirable woman in India received 20.3 lakh votes according to the newspaper. Leone emerged as the winner, defeating the likes of Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra all the way to the top spot. Who would have thought in 2011, when even Leone was hesitant to talk about her past, would she be counted along with other leading B-Town stars? Leone is rolling in money, and her financiers are laughing their way to the bank. Her latest offering "Ek Paheli Leela" beat Anushka Sharma starrer "NH 10" and Big B’s "Shamitabh" in box-office collections on the opening weekend. In spite of that, she knows it will be difficult to break into the top ranks of the film industry. In a recent interview with the Hindustan Times, Leone mentions that she does not hope to win major accolades in Bollywood, “Because of my background and who I am, I don’t think I will ever win it. There are a lot of people in this industry who don’t like me and wouldn’t want to see me win anything at these big events or fraternity or whatever.” While critics have panned her “wooden” attempts in front of the camera, it can hardly qualify as an excuse for not being nominated for awards. Actors with lesser used facial muscles have been nominated for far poorer performances, and even won. But Leone does not back down from the perception most people have of her. “I created that persona. I can’t get away from it, nor do I want to,” she told The Indian Express. And her husband is beside her every step of the way. All of Leone’s financials go through her husband. Leone is aware that her decisions have consequences. Joining the adult film industry was her conscious decision, and she understands business. “I choose to own a production house so I can produce, own, direct and distribute my own content and of others. It was the logical step to take to be successful in the business,” she says.Film director Mahesh Bhatt who launched the actor with Jism 2 says that Leone was very clear that she had left the adult film industry behind but was not embarrassed about it. He says, though, that Leone is “not fighting for the traditional Indian heroine’s space”. We have enough of them Sunny, we need more of you.
