The News Minute | November 3, 2014 | 12.44 pm ISTThe Union minister for Environment and Forest on Sunday can out with a novel and symbolic way to discourage smuggling of wildlife parts. The minister asked the authorities of the Delhi zoo to load all illegal animal parts like rhino horns, reptile skins and pelts into an oven and burn it. More than 42,000 such parts were set on fire in the Delhi zoo in presence of the authorities. Such an act will discourage the deplorable and illegal wildlife trade, the authorities believe. "The exercise is an attempt to deplore the unethical, indiscriminate and most unlawful activities of harvest and trade of wildlife products,” the minister said.There is no place for illegal activities such as poaching, illegal trafficking & trade of animals in our Country. pic.twitter.com/FqgNdtOpVZ— Prakash Javadekar (@PrakashJavdekar) November 2, 2014Animal poaching and smuggling have increased manifold in India mainly because of a high demand from China, Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries.
