The News Minute |August 4, 2014 | 1.24 pm ISTYou can download 64412 films in one second, if you have the world’s fastest optical cable.Danish researchers have created a world record for data transfer. At these speeds, you could download 43 terabits of data per second, which works out to 4494 films if they are 700 MB in size.According to a PTI report, researchers at the Technical University of Denmark have achieved this with a new type of optical cable, with just a single laser in the transmitter. The report states the cable is “borrowed from the Japanese telecoms giant NNT”, which compresses seven cores (glass threads), but is not thicker than regular optical cables. This makes it possible to transfer such large amounts of data at very high speeds. With this achievement, the DTU researchers have beaten the record set by the Karlsruhe Institut for Technologie, which was able to achieve data transfer of 32 terabits per second.
