The News Minute| August 3, 2014| 4.00 pm ISTA consortium of Farmer's Organisations across India has released a statement appreciating India's stand at the WTO. The statement given by more than 15 farmers' organisations in the country from various states says, "We, the undersigned, appreciate the stand taken by the Government of India at the WTO General Council, to postpone the adoption of the Trade Facilitation Agreement till a permanent solution on the issue of public stockholding for food security is found, and by seeking a “single undertaking” for the Bali agreements." The groups who have endorsed the government's stand at WTO include Alliance for Sustainable & Holistic Agriculture (ASHA), various units of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) and other organisations.Farmers' groups have been demanding that India should seek to postpone the adoption of the Trade Facilitation Agreement till a permanent solution on the issue of public stockholding for food security is found.They have also said that, "The consistency of the BJP as a party, by opposing the Bali outcomes earlier, and by seeking a permanent solution at the WTO now is well-appreciated, and such a consistency is expected in future too both at the national and international level."The organisations have also told the government that India's internal policies need to be consistent with the views expressed and stand taken in international negotiations. Recently farmer organisations had raised alarm at the policy stance by the government, whereby agricultural subsidies were being frozen and public food-stockholding progressively reduced. Farmers' organisations had said the two actions will endanger food security of the country and push farmers out of agriculture.
