The News Minute | December 14, 2014 | 4:50 pm ISTIn 1939, Mahatma Gandhi wrote a letter to a man. The man was none other than Adolf Hitler, and the letter by Gandhi appealed to him to refrain from beginning a war, which began the same year in September. The Second World War began around the time Poland invaded Germany that year. The letter was written a few months before that telling Hitler that he was ‘the one person in the world who can prevent a war which may reduce humanity to a savage state’.According to website lettersofnote.com, the letter never reached Hitler as it was intercepted by the British government.  The war began and so did Hitler’s rule that changed the lives of Germans and more importantly, Jews. Events are set in motion by even a single incident. Who knows what would have happened if that letter did indeed reach Hitler. The website provided a transcript of the original letter:As at Wardha,C. But I have resisted their request, because of the feeling that any letter from me would be an impertinence. Something tells me that I must not calculate and that I must make my appeal for whatever it may be worth.It is quite clear that you are today the one person in the world who can prevent a war which may reduce humanity to a savage state. Must you pay that price for an object however worthy it may appear to you to be? Will you listen to the appeal of one who has deliberately shunned the method of war not without considerable success?
