Barbie becomes a real girl: To come in curvy, petite and tall sizes

Written by : TNM Staff

Barbie debuted in 1959, and almost six decades after its debut, the world’s most famous doll, now has three body types- curvy, petite and tall.

One of the new Barbies has a bigger bust and a protruding tummy, reports Reuters. The Time magazine article on the same was titled,”Now can we stop talking about my body?"

California-based toy maker Mattel, has released seven new skin tones, representing a range of ethnicities and races.

Though adored by many, Barbie the blonde doll has always come under criticism for promoting unrealistic and impossible body proportions.

"We are excited to literally be changing the face of the brand. These new dolls represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them - the variety in body type, skin tones and style allows girls to find a doll that speaks to them,” Evelyn Mazzocco, senior vice president and global general manager of the Barbie brand, said in a statement.

The Wall Street Journal reports that though Mattel had sold more than a billion Barbie dolls over the decades, its sales were hit badly in the last few years.
