Uber enters India’s crowded food-tech space, launches UberEATS

Written by : TNM Staff

There is a new entrant in the food-tech space in India. Uber has launched its food delivery service UberEATS in India.

The service has been launched in Mumbai to begin with and will then be expanded to six cities by the end of 2017.

UberEATS is a seperate app is already available for download. With the Mumbai launch, it is now present in 78 cities across 26 countries including India.

In Mumbai, UberEATS has tied up with 200 restaurants in Mumbai. Some of them are the Good Wife, Freshmenu, Coffee by Di Bella, The Bohri Kitchen, Le 15 Patisserie

Uber has appointed Bhavik Rathod to head UberEATS in India.

This is also being seen as a way to bring in some revenue for the company to be able to utilize driver partner network better on the platform. UberEATS will charge Rs 15 per delivery.

And like Paytm has been the payment partner for Uber's ride-hailing service, it is the launch partner for payments for UberEATS as well.

This is Uber’s entry into an already crowded food-tech space in India. The trend started with startups like Zomato and later Food Panda, Swiggy and TinyOwl.

While some have succeeded quite a bit, some even shut shop. In fact, rival Ola, too, tried and tested food delivery with Ola Café in April 2015 but shut operations soon enough. Now with Google Areo too coming into the fray to help out companies like Faasos and Freshmenu, it remains to be seen if Uber survives in this competitive market.
