Time to update your Facebook app: Support to end for devices running older versions

Written by : TNM Staff

Facebook app and Messenger will soon stop working on many smartphones which run the older version of these apps.

According to a report in Independent on Wednesday, Facebook will end support for devices running some older versions of the apps, including v55 of the Facebook app and v10 of Messenger on Android.

Further, it will also stop support for Facebook on Windows Phone.

The report says that if you find you are suddenly unable to run either app, Facebook suggests updating to the latest version, or migrating to Facebook Lite, a pared down version of the platform

And if your mobile does not support the latest versions of Facebook, Facebook recommends going to its website through the mobile browser.

Facebook’s defense for this move, according to its blog is “our team spends countless hours making it the best way to message your friends and family.

“One of the ways we continue to improve is by consistently introducing rich features, like voice and video calling, games, and bots for Messenger. Using older versions of apps means that experiences won’t work well or sometimes not at all.”

Facebook for iPad v26, Messenger v8 for iOS, Facebook for iOS released in 2011, Facebook for Windows Phone, Messenger for Windows Phone 8 and 8.1, and Facebook for Windows 8 and the 8.1 desktop will not be supported also.

In fact, Facebook has already started sending out notification emails to those still using the app on devices set to be hit by the change, according to a report in The Sun.

“We regret to inform you that since the end of March, the app version you’re using is no longer supported and you can no send and receive messages,” the email reads.

Microsoft ended Skype support for older Windows Phone devices earlier this month.

And WhatsApp, too, confirmed that it will not be supporting its app on the platform earlier this year.
