Samsung teases its foldable smartphone, may launch it on Feb 20

Beating the expectations, the South Korean giant Samsung is now likely to showcase its first foldable smartphone the Samsung Galaxy F or Flex on February 20. The ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ 2019 event on that date is mainly meant to launch the next set of flagships, the Samsung Galaxy S10 variants. There has been a lot of speculation on the three phones that will be announced on that day at San Francisco and it was expected that the foldable phone may come later. But now with Samsung releasing a teaser video that suggests the foldable phone will definitely be one of the devices to be unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event. The teaser has a one liner that says, “the future of mobile will unfold on February 20, 2019”.

From whatever information is available, it is expected that the Samsung foldable phone will have the three-fold design with the two folds on either side opening up and offering a tablet-like display that could be around 7 inches or slightly more. When folded, there would be a secondary screen that will display the incoming calls and notifications and so on.

The question everyone seems to be concerned about is if the company plans to just make the announcement of the foldable phone or it has plans to launch the phone in the market immediately. The chances are this could just be using the event to unveil the device. Some market observers believe that Samsung is doing this to pre-empt what some of the other brands like Huawei might do at the MWC 2019 that kicks off days later. These companies are also likely to launch their foldable phones at the MWC.

For the record, the expectation is that Samsung can launch three variants of the Samsung Galaxy S10, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S10 Lite. With the foldable phone it will be 4 phones at the Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event on February 20.
