Own an iPhone 5S, 6 or iPad air? iOS 13 won't be compatible anymore

Written by : S. Mahadevan

Apple just announced its new version of the iOS operating system, the iOS 13. Unlike the Android OS where the individual smartphone manufacturers take over the responsibility for updating the OS on their different models, Apple updates all the previous years’ models of iPhones and iPads that run on the iOS to the latest version. However, there are certain limitations and some old models are phased out and kept out of the OS update list. This year, the axe will fall on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S. While the inclusion of the iPhone 5S is not so surprising eyebrows are being raised on withdrawing support to the iPhone 6.

This is one of the more popular models and there could still be millions of users left with the device. Apple has been following a certain pattern in updating older versions of the smartphones with the operating system being updated each year. So, the list of phones which will be considered for updation to the iOS 13 this year will be the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR.

Another significant announcement by Apple this year at the ongoing WWDC is that the iPads will have a dedicated OS, though largely based on the iOS 13. However, here again, a number of older models of iPads will stop receiving OS updates and therefore support from Apple. The iPad models to receive the new updates include iPad Air 2 and newer and iPad Mini 4 and newer. The anomaly being pointed out here by the observers is that both the iPad Mini 4 and the iPhone 6 both work on the A8 chipset. While the iPad gets the green signal, the iPhone doesn’t.

Apple promises that the new OS will prove to be quite efficient and enable better performances on the different devices. The introduction of the Dark Mode is one of the highlights of the new iOS 13.
