Flipkart on hiring spree after $1 billion round: Eyes new categories and personalisation

After raising $ 1 billion funding, e-tailer Flipkart is now going on a hiring spree. According to a report in the Financial Express, the company is looking to hire over 1,200 people, 20-30% higher than last year.

Hiring is taking place is three areas mainly – supply chain network, engineering and technology and into its new categories. The new categories that Flipkart is betting on is large appliances, consumer electronics, furniture and grocery.

The engineers Flipkart is looking to hire is in the areas of mobile experience, cloud infrastructure and personalization. Within personalization, the focus areas will be machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science. The idea is to strengthen its teams in these areas

Nitin Seth, Flipkart’s COO told FE that the new recruits will be on the company’s permanent rolls. Flipkart currently has 8,000 permanent and 20,000 temporary workers. Flipkart also hires temporary delivery boys during its big sales in the festive period. This year, too, the company will be hiring additional staff on a temporary basis during this period.

Flipkart is looking to grow is supply chain network aggressively. Seth told FE that the aim is to reach another 1,000 new pin codes and set up and additional 60 delivery hubs across the country, especially in North-East region, West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar.

Flipkart recently raised a funding of $1 billion. Media reports suggest that the funding round will stay open till the company raises at least $2 billion. In a bid to garner market share and retain its leadership position in India’s ecommerce market, it may also be looking to acquire eBay’s India operations.
