As global ecommerce major Amazon is expanding aggressively in India, which is one of its largest markets, it will be doubling its office space in India over the next one year. It has acquired office space across cities such as Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai and NCR to serve its local and global customers, according to a report in the Economic Times.

Amazon currently has 3.1 million square feet of office space across India and will be adding another 2.5 million square feet and Hyderabad will see most part of that.

Amazon first set up operations in Hyderabad over a decade ago. In fact it also set up its largest fulfillment centre in India in Hyderabad last week spanning over four lakh square feet with a massive storage capacity of 2.1 million cubic feet.

In addition to the 1.5 million sqft it already occupies in five buildings spread across the city, it is now looking at an additional 0.9-million-sqft space either in the financial district of Gachibowli or Raidurgam, ET reports.

All these are again separate from a 3-million-sqft campus that Amazon is building in Hyderabad.

In Bengaluru, Amazon is looking to add 0.6 million square feet in Outer Ring Road or the northern part of the IT city. This will be in addition to the 1.6 million sqft office space it has spread over two centres.

ET reports that this could be a good signal for business park developers after several startups majorly cut down office space as part of scaling back expansion plans due to lack of funds.

Snapdeal, for example, vacated its office space in Gurugram and Mumbai earlier this year after facing massive funding crunch.

Apart from Amazon, other startups such as Paytm, Flipkart, which have also raised huge amounts in funding are also expected to begin expanding aggressively. ET quotes sources as saying that Paytm is looking to take up more office in Bengaluru in the coming months.
