The latest movie of the Hunger Games series ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’ was released in the US on November 21, 2014 and is yet to make its way to India. But what sets this movie apart from the rest is its striking similarity to current political situations across the globe especially the ISIS and the killing of Osama –bin-Laden by the SEAL team.
The Hunger Games series is a dystopian and terrifying prediction of the future of US and looks at how rebels will fight against the dominating nature of the country. It is one of the most popular series in the American movie history which many people can relate to.
ISIS is a small rebel militant group in Iran, Syria, Libya and surrounding areas which main objective is to bring various Islamic nations under its control and challenge to the dominant West.
In the movie too, a small minority group is trying to control the world just like the ISIS and posing serious challenge to the West. The small group in the movie controls all the wealth, dissent and free speech is non-existant and rebellion is punishable by death. Doesn’t ISIS work on the same principle?
Additionally, there is also a section in the movie which bears resemblance to the SEAL team that killed Osama-bin-Laden. Reviewing the movie, the Daily Beast writes –
‘covert mission late in the film to rescue Peeta from the clutches of the Capitol. A volunteer team of six rebel fighters, led by Gale (Liam Hemsworth), flies in on a helicopter in the middle of the night and rappels down through a glass roof and into a compound allegedly housing Peeta .’
As Dena Takruri explains on AJ+, “For the folks on the left (in the movie), it is the nightmare of income inequality, where wealth is concentrated in the hands of a tiny elite which is actually not too far from our current reality.” She further goes on to say that the richest 1% of 40$ of all the wealth in the United States have only got richer after the 2008 financial crisis.
Looks like the US have a strange obsession in depicting real life situations in reel mode.
