Vishal Bharadwaj’s latest film Haider has received much acclaim from viewers and critics alike. But in an interview to The Hindu, the director says he was actually “scared” of Shakespeare.

Haider is Bharadwaj’s third adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. His first two attempts Omkara based on Othello and Maqbool based on Macbeth too were received well.

In his interview to The Hindu, Bharadwaj talks about how he first came across a Shakespearean tragedy – an abdridged one meant – for children, and realised that he liked it. He says that decided to make an adaption of Hamlet many years ago, but had not found the way to develop its background. Then, he read Basharat Peer’s Curfewed Night, and things took off from there.
