VAT on 'Gau Mutra' soon in Andhra?

A commercial tax office in Andhra's Guntur district created a furor after it sent a notice to a company to cough up five percent tax on the cow urine that it was selling.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) government in Andhra Pradesh is mooting to impose a 5% VAT on cow urine (gau mutram)...deputy commercial tax officer R Nageswara Rao said that as many as 30 Ayurvedic products enjoy exemption from VAT, but cow urine is not on the list declared under the entry No. 117 of AP Value Added Tax law. 

Speaking to the newspaper, the spokesperson of the company which received the notice, said "We tried explaining the adverse implications of levying tax on gou mutram to the officials. It only results in discouraging the consumption of cow urine besides hurting the sentiments of the people."
