Two children were killed and 24 others were injured on Sunday when a van that was travelling in the Visakhapatnam agency area overturned.

According to reports, the mishap occurred at around 7.30am on the ghat road near Luthupeta, which came under the Annavaram police station limits.

PTI reported that all the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, and 10 people were in a critical condition.

The report adds the van was filled with small traders who were going to attend a weekly-market at Korukonda.

The New Indian Express reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp bend near Luthupeta.

The Annavaram police station registered a case, and further investigation is on.

This accident comes in the backdrop of the state declaring a “war against road accidents.”

The state said that  more than 3,000 people are killed in road accidents every year in Andhra, and roughly 30,000 people suffer injuries.

The Transport Minister said that 25 toll plazas in the state will be equipped with breath analysers. The minister also added that the state would amend the Transport Act if necessary to hold vehicle owners responsible in case of accidents related to drunken driving.

“If a driver commits a mistake, even the owner should be made responsible for the accident. Even for long journeys, we will insist that two drivers are appointed, to ensure road safety. It is their responsibility," the minister had said.
