'Heavy to extremely heavy' rains are expected to continue in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for the next 24 hours, Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) predicts in its latest weather bulletin.

The IMD informed that an upper air cyclonic circulation will intensify into a low-pressure system in the coming 24 hours.

The twin states are already seeing heavy rains across the region.

Speaking to TNM, Dr Nagaratna, scientist at IMD Hyderabad, said, "The intensified low-pressure system during the next 24 hours will bend towards Telangana, leading to heavy to extremely heavy rains in most of the places, while very few places may witness light to moderate showers in both states in all districts."

And given the incessant rainfall, the Prakasham barrage in Vijayawada is witnessing an inflow of 20,000 cusecs of water, prompting officials to open five gates to release 2,900 cusecs on Sunday morning. Officials are also expecting the inflow to increase, given the growing water level in the Krishna river basin.

The projects in Telangana over the Krishna and Godavari basins have seen heavy inflow due to the rains in the last two days.

Officials in Andhra asked people living in the coastal areas not to venture near the seaside. Disaster management teams are on board across the coastal belt. The Telangana government has roped in as many as seven senior officials to oversee relief and assistance in several north Telangana areas.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Chief Secretary SK Joshi have asked officials to coordinate with district officials.
