Police driver killed in Nellore after cop's AK-47 misfires

The driver of an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Andhra was killed on Sunday after a gun accidentally misfired.

The driver was identified as Ramesh. According to local reports, the incident occurred at around 10 pm on Saturday near the Superintendent of Police’s office in Nellore.

ASP Sharat Babu’s personal gunman Nagendra, who was carrying an AK-47, which allegedly misfired injuring Ramesh, who was sitting next to him.  The bullets pierced into Ramesh’s chest. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital.

Due to excessive bleeding, Ramesh slipped into coma, and succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

Speaking to media, ASP Sharat Babu said that when he was about enter the SP’s office when he heard gun fire. It was then that he saw his driver grievously injured in the firing.

 “We panicked initially due to the loud noise of the gun firing. We couldn’t comprehend the situation. it happened within seconds.  Later we rushed him to the hospital,” he said.

The gunman Nagendra has been booked under IPC section 304 A (causing death due to negligence). A probe has been launched into the incident, police said.
