Five days after she went missing, officials recovered the body of doctor Korlapati Suryakumari, from the Ryves Canal in Vijayawada's Gandhinagar area on Saturday.

According to reports, the 25-year-old’s body had decomposed beyond recognition.

Locals had reportedly informed the police about an abandoned vehicle near the canal that belonged to the doctor, following which teams from the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) conducted a search operation to hunt for the doctor's body.

The Times of India reported that the Machavaram police recovered the body at around 4 pm in the evening, and suspect that she may have committed suicide.

“The body is badly decomposed from being in the water for 3 to 4 days. There will be a thorough probe," joint commissioner Ramana Kumar told TOI.

The Andhra Pradesh police had detained former TDP MLA Bobbili Jayaraj's son earlier this week, after a complaint by the doctor’s parents.

According to reports, the doctor, who was working at the Vissannapeta Public Health Centre, was the sister of Hepsiba Rani, an IAS officer in Karnataka.

The parents, in their complaint, had alleged that Vidyasagar had kidnapped their daughter.

The police also said that Swaroopa had developed a friendship with Vidyasagar and her parents recently.

Vidyasagar's lawyer, Thatikonda Chiranjeevi, criticised the police action on Vidyasagar and alleged that they had detained him for more than two days, without any evidence.

Speaking to the local media, Vidyasagar’s wife, Sushma, dismissed allegations made by the doctor's parents, and claimed that Suryakumari had visited their house, and wanted to marry Vidyasagar, as she was infatuated with him.

Media reports had also quoted an SMS from Swaroopa to Vidyasagar, that reportedly read, “Bobbie (Sagar's nickname) I loved you so much and despite you saying no, I have been forcing you to marry me....my parents are planning to take me away from this place and might come after you. So be careful.”

The police had said that this message was a crucial piece of evidence, in solving the case.
