Former Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister and YSRCP leader Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas, popularly known as Alla Nani, died of a cardiac arrest in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, September 15. He was 56.
Alla Nani, who served as Health and Medical Education Minister in the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government, was a three-time MLA from the Eluru Assembly constituency. His mortal remains were taken to his native Eluru by road, where family members, supporters and followers paid their last respects.
Alla Nani reportedly went for a morning walk and returned home before complaining of uneasiness. He was rushed to a hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest but died during treatment.
His body will be cremated in Eluru on Wednesday, September 16. He is survived by his wife Alla Rekha and two sons, Alla Kalikrishna Manichandra and Alla Ashish.
Born on December 30, 1969, in Eluru in the erstwhile West Godavari district, Alla Nani was the son of Alla Suryachandra Rao and Nagamani. He completed his schooling at KP High School in Eluru in 1985 and his Intermediate education at Sir CR Reddy College in 1988. He later enrolled for a BA at Andhra University but discontinued his studies.
Alla Nani contested the Eluru Assembly seat on a Congress ticket in 1994 and 1999 but lost both elections. He was elected MLA for the first time in 2004, defeating TDP candidate Ambika Krishna by 33,053 votes. He retained the seat in the 2009 Assembly elections.
He quit the Congress in 2012 and joined the YSR Congress Party the following year. In 2014, he became the YSRCP district president, while he also contested the Eluru Assembly seat that year and lost.
Alla Nani subsequently entered the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council after being elected as an MLC under the MLA quota in 2017. He returned to the Assembly in 2019 after winning the Eluru seat on a YSRCP ticket.
After the YSRCP formed the government in 2019, Alla Nani was appointed Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education. He held the health portfolio through the COVID-19 pandemic and continued in the post until the Cabinet was reshuffled in April 2022.
Alla Nani lost the Eluru Assembly seat in the 2024 elections by more than 62,000 votes. He subsequently resigned from the YSRCP and its district president post in August 2024, saying he was leaving politics. He joined the Telugu Desam Party in February 2025.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over Alla Nani’s death and conveyed his condolences to his family. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and Education Minister Nara Lokesh also expressed grief over his death.
YSRCP president and former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, under whom Alla Nani served as Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister, said he was deeply shocked by the news.
Jagan recalled Alla Nani’s three terms as Eluru MLA and his service in his Cabinet, describing his death as an irreparable loss to his family and admirers.
Former Rajya Sabha MP V Vijayasai Reddy also condoled Alla Nani’s death, saying his public service and contribution to Andhra Pradesh would be remembered.
Lokesh remembered Alla Nani as a leader who stayed away from controversies and maintained cordial relations with others.
