A student of Sri Venkateswara Medical College in Tirupati took her own life on Sunday, the second such incident in a week, police said.

Gitika, 19, was an MBBS second-year student. She ended her life at her house in the evening, police said. According to the police, she killed herself due to her personal reasons.

Her mother found her in the evening when she went to check on Gitika. She was declared dead when she was brought to the RUIA hospital at Tirupati around 6 pm.

Collector PS Pradyumna, who visited the hospital, told the media that Gitika took her life due to "purely personal reasons".

Gitika hails from Kadapa and was living in an apartment in Tirupati with her mother Haritha Devi.

The incident came a week after the death of B Shilpa, a postgraduate student in paediatrics, who took her own life at her house in Chittoor district's Pileru town.

In April, the 30-year-old student had written to Governor ESL Narasimhan, accusing three professors of the pediatric department of sexual harassment.

The student was upset after she failed her exams. She told her friends that she was deliberately failed for complaining against the professors.

Following an uproar from students, authorities transferred the college Principal and formed in May a three-member inquiry committee headed by the Director of Medical Education, K Babji. The panel is yet to submit its report.
