Andhra to witness heavy rains as deep depression approaches coast

Written by : TNM Staff

The Andhra Pradesh coast is all set to receive heavy rains at isolated places, after a well-marked low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal turned into a depression on Wednesday.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), said that the system will very likely to intensify into a deep depression and move northwestwards towards Andhra Pradesh.

According to reports. strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph are expected to blow over Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast on December 8 and 9, even as the sea will become rough during this period.

The Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC) in Visakhapatnam, which is also tracking the weather system, asked fishermen not to venture out to sea.

Heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari and West Godavari on Dec 8 and 9, while light to moderate rain or thundershowers are  predicted over other districts, The Hindu reported.

However, weather experts also said that the deep-depression would not intensify further, into a cyclone, as it would weaken a bit when it hit the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast.

Earlier this week, Visakhapatnam District Collector Pravin Kumar directed mandal-level officers to be on alert and take precautionary measures to minimise the damage in view of the IMD's warning, according to reports.

The Collector asked officials to ensure that harvested paddy be covered carefully with tarpaulin sheets to prevent crop damage, while also taking other measures to ensure that there was no water logging in the fields, the report adds.

Earlier this week, in yet another department, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) asked fishermen in both eastern and western coasts of India, not to venture out to the sea for a few days, due to adverse weather conditions.
